White as the salt lakes in Kenya that carry the same name: Magadi+ is a impressive, rich rose with a stunning presence. “The Great Rift Valley at Lake Magadi is like this rose,” says Lex Voorn. “It’s a rich source of fossils that allow study of human evolution. Somehow life seems to have started there, that’s why Magadi+ is named after it: an almost white rose as a symbol of a new beginning.”

Nakuru+ is a mutation of the European variety Talea+ and has inherited its strong points: high productivity and a big, wealthy flower head. “It’s inspired by the flamingo population of Lake Nakuru in Kenya, not far from the Lex+ testing greenhouses” says Voorn. “There’s millions of them, like a long pink ribbon along the coastline. Nakuru+ has exactly that unique shade of very light pink.”

A fragrant, fiery masterpiece of scarlet and gemlike pinks: Sanaa+ is almost a bicolour rose, graduating from dark magenta to hot pink. Deep outer petals give way to graduated highlights. “The word means ‘art’,” says Lex Voorn. “I think of this rose as a piece of art, because of the colour variation in white and pink that is so deep it’s almost black. A masterpiece of nature.”
