White roses symbolize endings and beginnings, Avalanche+ meant the end of my old life and the start of a very exiting new one. The rose is as white as snow and as overpowering as an avalanche, hence the name.”

This rose is exotic and warm, like she’s picked straight from a maharaja’s garden. “My daughter Joanie named the rose Savita+, which means ‘the sun’ in Hindu Veda’s,” explains Lex Voorn. “Savita is a place in which power, energy and charisma are stored. It supports life and promotes security and prosperity. She named it well; it suits the rose perfectly.”

Almas+ (Arabic for Diamond) is the latest diamond of Lex+. She is a mutation of the already world-famous Miss Piggy+. Almas+ has all the same good looks and vase life as Miss Piggy+ but with another colour. Creamy Yellow on the outside and also famously fierce on the outside.

Like champagne in a vase Talea+ roses rise to the occasion, like winning the Fleur Primeur 2004. Even in the very early stages, Talea+ was a budding diva.”

The view from the Lex+ hothouse is quite stately: endless green polder under the high Dutch sky. The sunrise in Kudelstaart is as beautiful as it gets, in colours of pale pink and almost there orange, visible through the mist above the meadows. This must have inspired Avalanche+ to mutate in variety with a hint of pink in its petals. And good for her, for Peach Avalanche+ became the instant winner of the Fleur Primeur in 2007. Very productive plant, easy grower, suitable for almost anywhere in the world.

Prima Donna+ is Italian for "First lady". The term was used to designate the leading female singer in the opera company, the person to whom the prime roles would be given. Legendarily, these prima donnas were often regarded as egotistical, unreasonable and irritable, with a rather high opinion of themselves not shared by others. In recent times the term prima donna has almost become a synonym of diva and is used to designate popular female opera singers, especially sopranos. She gets her name from one; Dolce Vita+ is beautiful enough to take on Anita Ekberg.”

Mad, bad and lovely to know: party girl Fiesta+ is a very amusing and bright mutation of King Kong+ that brings a smile to everyone’s face. “Probably a very lucky accident,” says Lex Voorn. “When people first see Fiesta+, they want to check if it’s not plastic. But it’s a real Lex+ rose, strong and with the characteristic big flower head. It looks like candy, like a dessert, like a carnival, like a really good party – but is still a rose. "Usually it's at the after party that things really start happening," says Lex Voorn. "This rose blooms like that: first she's demure and chic, later on she swirls into something quite spectacular: a very colourful and light creature of the night, also stunning during the day."
