Avalanche+ is one of Lex+ Greatest Hits, thanks to a big, powerful flower that seems to bloom forever. “From the very first moment I knew this was a special rose,” says Lex Voorn. “The success of Avalanche+ made it possible to create many more beautiful roses, but this one will forever keep a special place in my heart. White roses symbolize endings and beginnings, Avalanche+ meant the end of my old life and the start of a very exiting new one. The rose is as white as snow and as overpowering as an avalanche, hence the name.”

Almas+ (Arabic for Diamond) is the latest diamond of Lex+. She is a mutation of the already world-famous Miss Piggy+. Almas+ has all the same good looks and vase life as Miss Piggy+ but with another colour. Creamy Yellow on the outside and also famously fierce on the outside.

This rose is exotic and warm, like she’s picked straight from a maharaja’s garden. “My daughter Joanie named the rose Savita+, which means ‘the sun’ in Hindu Veda’s,” explains Lex Voorn. “Savita is a place in which power, energy and charisma are stored. It supports life and promotes security and prosperity. She named it well; it suits the rose perfectly.”

Like champagne in a vase Talea+ roses rise to the occasion, like winning the Fleur Primeur 2004. Extraordinary glamorous, with a large crown of petals on a strong stem, it’s been an international success since its introduction. “The name is derived from the Latin word Talea, or ‘to cut’, its common usage today is to make or adapt to fit a particular purpose—as in tailor-made for special moments,” says Lex Voorn. “It certainly was when I first saw it bloom – I couldn’t believe my eyes. Even in the very early stages, Talea+ was a budding diva.”

The view from the Lex+ hothouse is quite stately: endless green polder under the high Dutch sky. The sunrise in Kudelstaart is as beautiful as it gets, in colours of pale pink and almost there orange, visible through the mist above the meadows. This must have inspired Avalanche+ to mutate in variety with a hint of pink in its petals. And good for her, for Peach Avalanche+ became the instant winner of the Fleur Primeur in 2007. Very productive plant, easy grower, suitable for almost anywhere in the world.

A rose with an impressive pedigree, since it mutated from Lex+’ grande dame Avalanche+. The same excellent qualities – productiveness, big flower head – are in Sweet Avalanche + combined with the kind of dreamy porcelain pink that seems almost surreal. During the prestigious Hortifair 2006 in Amsterdam, Sweet Avalanche+ won Fleur Primeur 2006, the award for best introduction of a new flower to the Flower Auctions.

Like a colourful princess in an Indian Bollywood movie this rose blooms beautifully in orange, pink and yellow. “Carpe Diem+ is the kind of rose that deserves a name like that,” says Lex Voorn. “When it is possible to make something this glorious together with nature, that is indeed a reason to be cheerful. Although I think you should pick every day anyway: life’s too short to not enjoy it.”

A shocking pink heart surrounded by virginal white petals: Dolce Vita+ celebrates the good life with Italian flair and ditto temper. “I like a bit of drama,” says Lex Voorn. “This rose could easily have a part in a film by Fellini, if I had anything to say about it. She gets her name from one; Dolce Vita+ is beautiful enough to take on Anita Ekberg.”

Mad, bad and lovely to know: party girl Fiesta+ is a very amusing and bright mutation of King Kong+ that brings a smile to everyone’s face. “Probably a very lucky accident,” says Lex Voorn. “When people first see Fiesta+, they want to check if it’s not plastic. But it’s a real Lex+ rose, strong and with the characteristic big flower head. It looks like candy, like a dessert, like a carnival, like a really good party – but is still a rose. Go one, have a laugh.”

A darker sister of Fiesta+ this is one to linger until the sunrise matches her outfit. Interesting, strong, with the big flower head that is the traditional trademark of Lex+. "Usually it's at the after party that things really start happening," says Lex Voorn. "This rose blooms like that: first she's demure and chic, later on she swirls into something quite spectacular: a very colourful and light creature of the night, also stunning during the day."

The extremely productive Geneve+ is a mutation of the Amsterdam+, blessed with a warm apricot glow. “Very interesting because of the high amount of stems it delivers,” says Voorn, “but also because Geneve+ is an excellent grower on a high altitude. It’s a beautiful, rich rose, that cheers you up in no time.”

Red roses are the ultimate symbol of love, overwhelmingly romantic in a bouquet, but also stunningly significant in its simplicity as one single rose. Amada+ is a rich, red variety with a big flower, consisting of sensual petals with a velvety touch. They catch the light like nothing else. An almost blue haze on the outside, nearly black in the folds. The name means 'Beloved' in Spanish en the flower expresses just that."
