The extremely productive Geneve+ is a mutation of the Amsterdam+, blessed with a warm apricot glow. “Very interesting because of the high amount of stems it delivers,” says Voorn, “but also because Geneve+ is an excellent grower on a high altitude. It’s a beautiful, rich rose, that cheers you up in no time.”

Different shades of cream make for a very opulent rose with abundant charisma. “Sanibel+ has an affluent feel, like the beach in Miami, Florida that carries the same name,” says Lex Voorn. “It’s not just the colour, it is the overall impression it gives. Very romantic, but also very chic. And a tad mysterious. As if it lives by the royal adage ‘never complain, never explain’.”

Creamy, big, rich, luscious and lovely. Takini is an otherworldly beauty named after the potion shamans in Suriname, French Guiana and parts of Brazil use to get happy. And we mean really, really happy. As in 'We can hear the flowers sing!' happy. Just in case you'd like to know: Takini is a soprano and it ain't over till this fat lady sings.

Like a whisper Chévere+ unfolds tender petals in sweet pink that look both tropical as classic. Very special is the heart of the rose, which whirls and swirls with delight. “We looked for a name that would be an instant compliment,” says Lex Voorn. “Chévere is a Latin-American expression for ‘very good’. It originated from ‘cheg ebere’, an African word that means ‘good, nice, cool’. It’s what you would say about a good song or a beautiful woman. And a rose like Chévere, of course.”

Figaro has instant presence, so it’s no wonder it immediately takes centre stage like the lead in the riotous romantic opera The Barber of Seville by Rossini. “If colour had sound, the rich nuances of Figaro+ would match the baritone in the opera. It’s also a little cheeky, which suits the character of the rose and Figaro himself.” All together now: Largo al factotum della città, la la la la laaa!

High and mighty in height and shape, but otherwise 'espiéndido' in softness. Hermosa+ has a beautiful antique appeal, as if it has been lovingly grown in an old garden. Hermosa means 'beautiful' in Spanish, like the Portugese 'formosa'. And this rose is exactly that, in light powdery pink with a hint of salmon and tender little brims of yellow around the petals.

A fragrant, fiery masterpiece of scarlet and gemlike pinks: Sanaa+ is almost a bicolour rose, graduating from dark magenta to hot pink. Deep outer petals give way to graduated highlights. “The word means ‘art’,” says Lex Voorn. “I think of this rose as a piece of art, because of the colour variation in white and pink that is so deep it’s almost black. A masterpiece of nature.”

A lovely pear shaped bud in soft yellow, dusted with a little pink, named after a cheerful Colombian folk dance. “The variety is selected in Ecuador and Colombia, hence the name,” explains Voorn. “It seems to work in Japan, Australia and South Africa as well, although the head size will be smaller in these countries. It will only be available for South America and Asia.”

Who doesn't know the Dollar? It's the most used currency world-wide. The name comes from the Spanish dollars, so called in the English speaking world because of their similarity in size and weight to the German silver Thaler coins that were first minted in 1520 from silver taken from a mine at Joachimsthal, Bohemia, in the Holy Roman Empire. These days Dollar stands for a big headed beautiful rose grown on high altitude. Lex+ the rose factory is proud to be the owner of the new Dollar+. The colour and head size will make everybody fall in love with it.

Hip, hot and happy: Dutchy+ is a surprise party on a stem. Its appearance changes with ever petal that decides to curl open, ending in a grand finale that says: ‘I’m big and I’m beautiful’. “Call me sentimental, I just wanted it to be Dutch,” says Lex Voorn. “Dutchy+ is a good name for a rose in the colour of Holland’s national pennant.”

This hot tamale looks like she's ready to kick up her heels, throw of her mantilla and click her castanets in a fierce flamenco. Spanish Dress+ combines a big flower head with the kind of red that can only be described as 'Ay-ay-ay!' Of course you will fall for her. Hard. To quote Van Morrison: 'Take me back, one more time, Spanish Rose'.
